Chinese robotics company UBTech has unveiled the U1, a lifelike humanoid
Chinese robotics company UBTech has unveiled the U1, a lifelike humanoid companion robot designed for mass production, with prices starting at 119,800 yuan ($17,600) and reaching 990,000 yuan ($145,700) for a premium version.
Marketed as a solution to loneliness, the AI-powered robot can hold conversations, provide emotional support, remind users to take medication, and monitor wellbeing. Buyers can also customize its appearance to resemble a loved one, celebrity, or fictional character. The company says it has already received more than 13,300 pre-orders, with deliveries set to begin in September.
UBTech is targeting single people and older adults, though analysts say such robots are likely to remain a niche product due to the “uncanny valley” effect, where highly human-like machines can make people uncomfortable. The launch comes as China continues to lead the global humanoid robotics industry, supported by strong government backing and a rapidly growing domestic sector.
