Apple has canceled a joint project with Samsung to use a South Korean-designed OLED
Industry publication The Elec reports that Apple has canceled a joint project with Samsung to use a South Korean-designed OLED display for the upcoming 10.9-inch iPad Air.
According to people familiar with the matter, the project was stopped either due to the single OLED panel structure or due to profitability issues. Single stack refers to the currently widely used OLED panel structure in which the red, green and blue diode form a single emission layer.
Apple didn't like the brightness level of these OLED panels. In addition, the company has raised concerns about the lifespan of these displays, as consumers tend to use iPads longer than smartphones. Instead, the iPhone maker wants to use a two-stack tandem structure for its first OLED tablet. This structure consists of two layers and can double the brightness. Moreover, the service life of such panels will increase up to four times.
The second factor, profitability, is that Samsung cannot be confident about the long-term supply of OLED displays for the iPad Air. In this case, the production of panels will not pay off.
