The James Webb Telescope collided with a micrometeorite
The James Webb Telescope collided with a micrometeorite between May 23 and 25
NASA experts confirmed the impact with an object the size of a grain of sand, saying that this would not affect the scientific program in any way. The telescope still performs at a level that exceeds all requirements, despite the resulting defect in the data. Analysis of the situation and all kinds of measurements are ongoing.
Engineers were prepared for such events, and the mirror is designed to withstand such occurrences. Whats more, JWST can adjust the segments of the mirrors to reduce the effect of impacts by compensating for distortion.
"We have had 4 micrometeorite impacts since the launch of the telescope that we were prepared for. But the last one exceeds the numbers, however, this impact will not affect the work of JWST and its science program in any way," says Goddard Center engineer, Cesari Taddeu
