Apple has changed its OS update system and added to the list of obsolete gadgets.

Apple introduced a new security update format—Background Security Improvement—and also deprecated a number of older devices.

The new mechanism allows for minor fixes to be installed between major iOS, iPadOS, and macOS updates. They are now downloaded in the background and require a short device reboot—less than a minute.

The updates target key system components, such as Safari, WebKit, and system libraries. The first update has already been released and contains fixes for WebKit. The feature is available on devices running OS version 26.1 and is enabled by default.

You can check information about installed background updates in the "Privacy & Security" section of your device's settings.

Apple has also deprecated the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4 (8GB). This means that more than seven years have passed since their end of sales. These devices will no longer be accepted for repair at authorized Apple service centers.
