Measuring only about 10 miles (16 km) in diameter, these stellar remnants are formed when massive stars—at least 10 times the mass of our Sun—reach the end of their lives, collapse under their own gravity, and undergo a supernova explosion. The result is a superdense primarily composed of neutrons, held together by intense gravitational forces.

The Extreme Density of Neutron Stars

The material inside a neutron star is compressed to an unimaginable degree. A typical tablespoon of matter from a neutron star weighs over 1 billion tons (900 billion kg), equivalent to the mass of Mount Everest. This is due to the immense gravitational compression that forces protons and electrons to combine into neutrons, prevented from further collapse only by neutron degeneracy pressure.
